What is an editorial calendar?
An editorial calendar is a calendar or schedule used to organize what will be posted and when it will be posted on your blog, on social media, on your newsletter, and elsewhere. An editorial calendar can be something you create in a planner — or something you maintain online via your calendar.
How do I create an editorial calendar?
1. Begin by creating a plan. How often would you like to post on your blog? How often would you like to share on social media? Here at With Grace and Gold, we share one blog post on our blog every week. We share that blog post on Facebook and Instagram. Knowing what you’d like to share and when you’d like to share it will help you to create a plan — a blank schedule you can then fill in. (Tip: There is no right or wrong answer; simply think about your goals, your schedule, and your availability for creating content.)
2. Fill in the blanks. Once we’ve created our plan, we can begin developing each post. As an example, if we know we’d like to write one blog post per week, we’ll mark down the date on which our blog post will go live and the topic we will write about.
3. Write, write, write. With a schedule for when you’ll post, and a plan for where you’ll post — it’s time to write your posts. We prefer to batch our tasks at With Grace and Gold, so planning blog posts, newsletters, and social media posts often takes place on one day or a couple of days at the start of every month.
4. Maintain consistency and variety. An editorial calendar is a great way to help each reader grow accustomed to what will be posted on your blog and when. As a result, each reader will know what to expect when visiting your blog or social media page. This mix of a consistent posting schedule and a variety of topics is helpful for us and for our readers!
5. Be mindful of your analytics. Take a peek at your blog and social media analytics. When are your posts being read? How are your posts being found? Which types of posts are most successful? The better you understand your analytics, the more effectively you can create and schedule each post.
Overall, creating an editorial calendar is a useful tool for your business and blog. It can help you to stay organized, stick to a schedule, and maintain the consistency that you and your readers are looking for! In addition, it is a great way to be proactive about your work and ensure your marketing is always up-to-date.
