Why Your Website Isn’t Doing the Heavy Lifting (And How to Fix It)
Welcome to the Brand It, Build It Podcast. I’m your host, Kelly Zugay, and I’m so glad you’re here. Today’s episode is for the business owner who has DIYed their web design — and aren’t yet experiencing the results they’d hoped for. Maybe you’ve been there. Maybe you’re there right now. And if you’re being totally honest with yourself… you might have known it wasn’t quite right even as you hit “publish.”
Today, I want to talk about why that happens — and offer three really clear, honest reasons your website might not be pulling its weight… along with what you can do about it this week. Let’s get into it.
You’re Still Writing Like a Service Provider — Not a Guide
Most websites are written from a “here’s what I do” perspective. It’s the default mode for so many business owners — especially early on. We proudly list our services, share our credentials, and explain what we offer: “I’m a photographer.” “I offer brand design.” “I create handmade home goods.”
That’s all important — but it’s not enough.
Your client doesn’t just want to know what you do. They want to know what it does for them. They want to feel seen, understood, and guided toward something better — whether that’s an elevated online presence, a more peaceful home, or memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
One of the most helpful mindset shifts I’ve learned is this: you’re not the hero of your business — your client is. You’re the guide. You’re the expert who’s been there, done that, and knows the best, clearest, kindest way to get your client from where they are now to where they want to be.
So instead of writing your website from a “this is what I offer” lens, ask yourself:
- What’s the transformation I help create?
- What problem do I solve?
- How does my client’s life or business improve because of my work?
This week, choose one paragraph on your homepage and rewrite it with that lens in mind. Make it all about the client — their dreams, their goals, and how you help them get there.
You’re Not Showing the Process (Or Making It Feel Easy)
Let’s be real: booking a service — especially a high-investment one — is emotional. Your potential clients aren’t just buying a product or service… they’re stepping into something unfamiliar. That means fear, hesitation, and doubt are almost always along for the ride.
That’s why showing your process clearly — and making it feel simple and approachable — is essential. If a visitor can’t quickly see how working with you works, they’re far more likely to click away than to reach out.
Think of your website like an invitation. Is it clear how to RSVP? Is it obvious what the next step is? Or are you asking them to figure it out?
According to a 2023 usability study by Clutch, 94% of users say easy navigation is the most important factor when making a purchasing decision. That includes knowing how the process works.
So, how can you make your process feel easier? Add a brief “How It Works” section to your homepage or services page. This doesn’t need to be complicated — in fact, the simpler, the better. Try something like:
- Inquire using the contact form.
- Receive a personalized proposal within 48 hours.
- Celebrate the transformation we’ll create together.
This little section builds trust, provides clarity, and helps your client feel taken care of before they even reach out.
Your Website Doesn’t Reflect the Price You’re Charging
Here’s a hard truth: If your brand and website don’t reflect the value of your services, your potential clients will feel the disconnect — even if they can’t explain why.
And in my experience, this is especially common when small business owners raise their prices. You’ve done the brave work of refining your offers, elevating your experience, and charging what your work is worth… but your website still looks like version 1.0 of your business.
That’s where the breakdown happens.
Your website is your digital storefront. If you walked into a boutique that claimed to be high-end but had dim lighting, pixelated signage, and boxes on the floor… would you still pay luxury prices? Probably not. And the same is true online.
According to Stanford’s Web Credibility Research, 75% of people judge a business’s credibility based on its website design. So if your photos are outdated, your fonts are inconsistent, or your messaging doesn’t reflect your true value — it’s time for a refresh.
That doesn’t mean you need a full overhaul. Sometimes, a few updates can make a huge difference:
- Swap out old photos for fresh, on-brand visuals.
- Refresh your homepage copy to reflect your current offers.
- Invest in a premium Showit template that reflects your aesthetic and pricing.
The goal is alignment. When your visual brand and website reflect the level of service you’re providing, clients feel that — and they’re far more likely to trust and invest in you.
In Closing
If your website isn’t doing the heavy lifting right now — if it’s not bringing in leads or sales or momentum — it’s not because you’re failing. It’s just a sign that something’s out of sync… and the good news is, it can be fixed.
To recap:
- Start speaking like a guide, not just a service provider.
- Make your process clear and simple — help your client see the journey.
- Ensure your website and visual brand match the value you deliver.
Even one of these shifts can help turn your website into a tool that not only attracts but converts.
And if you’re ready to take that next step — whether it’s customizing a template or crafting a one-of-a-kind brand and website — we’re here to help. Our design approach blends beauty and strategy, so your website works as hard as you do.
Thanks for tuning in today. If this episode resonated with you, I’d be so grateful if you shared it with a friend or left a quick review. See you next time!
