Welcome back to Brand It, Build It Podcast — I’m your host, Kelly Zugay, and I’m so glad you’re here. We’ve often discussed the importance of your website’s first impression, how to write a strong headline, how to guide your visitors with intention. But today, I want to go just a little deeper.
This episode is less about “how to design it” — and more about why it matters from a psychological standpoint. Because when someone lands on your website, what happens in those first few seconds is actually more about their brain than your branding. That small section at the very top of your site — the part people see before they scroll — holds way more power than we often realize. Let’s talk about why.
What is “Above the Fold”?
So, first: What does “above the fold” actually mean?
It’s a phrase that comes from newspapers — back when papers were literally folded in half. The top half, the part you’d see first on a newsstand, had to be attention-grabbing enough to get you to pick it up and read more.
Today, “above the fold” refers to the first portion of your website a visitor sees before they scroll. It’s your digital first impression — the homepage handshake, if you will. And it’s not just design. It’s psychology.
Why Those First Few Inches Matter So Much
Here’s something wild: people form an impression of your website — and your business — in 50 milliseconds. Less than a blink. And that first impression? It’s often what determines whether someone sticks around… or clicks away.
But this isn’t just about surface-level aesthetics. What’s really happening is that our brains are scanning for answers to three quick questions:
- Where am I?
- Is this for me?
- What do I do next?
If your website can answer those three questions clearly — right at the top — you’re way more likely to create connection and keep people engaged.
So, how do you do that? Let’s talk about what your “above the fold” space really needs.
3 Must-Haves for Your Above-the-Fold Section
If you’ve ever felt unsure about how to structure the top of your site, or if you’ve felt like you had to say everything all at once — here’s your permission to simplify. Here are three things every above-the-fold section needs to include:
1. A Clear, Confidence-Building Headline
This is the very first thing someone sees — so clarity is everything. You want your headline to clearly say who you are, what you do, or who you serve. It doesn’t need to be clever. It needs to be clear.
Instead of “Designs That Shine,” try something like:
“Custom Brand and Web Design for Interior Designers.”
This way, your dream client knows immediately they’re in the right place.
2. A Grounding, Helpful Subheading
Right beneath your headline, add a simple sentence or two that expands on your value — the transformation you provide or the experience you offer.
Example:
“Through elevated, conversion-focused design, we help you attract aligned clients with ease.”
This line should give your visitor a little more context — and a little more confidence in you.
3. A Call-to-Action Button
Finally, tell them what to do next. Not in a pushy way — just in a clear, friendly, helpful way.
Maybe it’s:
- “View Our Portfolio”
- “Browse the Template Shop”
- “Get in Touch”
Whatever it is, make sure the button stands out and is easy to find. You don’t want someone to scroll around wondering what to do — that tiny moment of uncertainty is often when people drop off.
A Kind Reminder: You Can Always Refine
If you’re listening and thinking, “Ugh, I don’t think my site has any of this,” please know — that’s okay. You’re not behind. You’re not doing anything wrong.
Websites evolve. Businesses evolve. You can always come back, simplify, and strengthen that above-the-fold space. In fact, we recommend revisiting this section regularly — especially if your offerings or audience shift. And you don’t have to say everything in that space. You just need to say enough for someone to feel:
“Yes. This is for me.”
In Closing
The very top of your website — it might feel small, but it holds so much weight. It’s your chance to make a connection. To offer clarity. To build trust in the very first second. And when you lead with intention, even just in that one small section… the rest of your website becomes that much more effective, too.
