I’m so glad you’re here for another episode of Brand It, Build It Podcast. I’m Kelly Zugay, and today, I want to have a really honest conversation about business growth. But… not in the way you might be used to hearing it. You see, I think we’ve all been taught to think of business growth like a race — like there’s a finish line we need to sprint toward, milestones we need to hit quickly, and if we don’t, somehow we’re behind. But the truth is, that way of thinking is exhausting. It’s unsustainable. And honestly? It’s not even true.
What if, instead of thinking of your business like a race, you thought of it as a garden? I know it sounds a little poetic, but bear with me — because this shift has changed the way I approach my business, and I think it could change things for you, too.
Growth happens in seasons.
When you think of a garden, you think of seasons, right? Seasons of planting, growing, blooming, and resting. And I truly believe our businesses move through those same rhythms.
There are seasons when you’re planting — setting up systems, refining your brand, creating offers. These seasons often don’t look very impressive from the outside, but they are the foundation for everything that comes next. Then there are seasons when you’re growing — showing up consistently, nurturing your audience, creating content. This stage can feel slow, but just like a plant beneath the soil, so much is happening that you can’t see yet. Eventually, you’ll move into a blooming season — where things feel aligned, clients are flowing in, and all of that behind-the-scenes work starts to pay off. And finally, there’s the resting season — a time to pause, reflect, and prepare for what’s next.
Here’s the key takeaway: every single season is valuable. You can’t rush a garden to bloom. And the same is true for your business.
How to nurture your business through every season.
If you’re listening and thinking, “Okay, Kelly, that sounds nice, but what do I do when growth feels slow?” I’ve been there, and I want to share a few things that have helped me stay grounded.
First, focus on your roots. Go back to the foundation of your business and ask yourself, is my brand still aligned with who I am and who I want to serve? Is my website working for me? Are my systems and processes making things easier or harder? Strengthening your roots is never wasted time.
Second, nurture the seeds you’ve already planted. So often, we’re tempted to chase after the next shiny strategy or quick fix. But what if instead, you kept watering the offers, relationships, and content you’ve already created? Growth isn’t always instant. Sometimes, it’s quiet and gradual.
Lastly, give yourself permission to rest. I know how hard this is, but rest is productive. Just like a garden needs a winter to regenerate, you and your business need seasons of stillness. Some of my best ideas and biggest breakthroughs have come during the quiet seasons when I allowed myself to step back.
A personal story about growing slow.
At With Grace and Gold, we’ve had seasons where everything felt exciting and fast-paced — and we’ve had seasons where we were quietly working behind the scenes, refining our process, improving our client experience, and building systems that no one saw. Looking back, those quieter seasons were the reason we were able to sustain our growth when the busy seasons came. If we had tried to rush through them, we wouldn’t have had the solid foundation that allows us to serve our clients well today.
You are not behind.
So, if you’re listening today and you’re in a slower season — maybe you’re planting, or quietly growing beneath the surface — I want you to know, you are not behind. You are in a season. And every season serves a purpose. When you stop comparing your journey to someone else’s and start trusting the pace of your own growth, that’s when business starts to feel fulfilling, sustainable, and truly yours.
Your business is a garden. Let it grow in its own time.
