Every social media platform you use on behalf of your small business is unique. Like any marketing resource, there are ways to use social media effectively in order to build your brand, connect with your audience, and grow your business. Today, we’re excited to share 3 common social media mistakes and tips for using social media effectively!
3 Common Social Media Mistakes
- Sharing the same content across each platform. Each social media platform is unique, and as a result, content should be shared differently across each platform. As a business, you’ll want to give visitors a reason for following each platform. In other words, if the content you share is the same across each platform, visitors will only want to follow along with one platform; if each platform has its own special features, visitors will want to follow along with each platform. What does this look like in practice? As an example, we use our Facebook page to share our recent blog posts and recent portfolio additions. We use our Instagram to share behind-the-scenes content and our real-life thoughts about running a creative business. We use our Twitter to share quick business tips, tools, and resources. Each platform has its own “benefits” — and by sharing unique content across each platform, we believe we’re giving visitors a unique and worthwhile experience on each platform.
- Never providing a call-to-action. The second of these common social media mistakes is never providing a call-to-action. When you share content via social media, what do you hope your visitors, followers, and friends will do? Do you ask them to like, to share, to click through to your Website or blog? Having a call-to-action — at least more often than not — is essential. By doing so, you can encourage your visitors, followers, and friends to engage with your content. Your work is worth sharing and celebrating — don’t be afraid to say so!
- Forgetting to engage with your visitors, followers, and friends. Social media should never be a one-way street. Social media was created for us to be social, to form connections — and hopefully, to form connections so meaningful and lasting, they translate to our everyday life. Make time to reply to those who comment, like, and share your content. Doing so will help you to build a community around your business — which is a rare and extremely special thing!
