Welcome back to Brand It, Build It Podcast — a podcast created to equip you with actionable brand and web design education to help you grow your business with clarity and confidence. I’m your host, Kelly Zugay, and today we’re exploring a question I believe every business owner should ask: Is my website confusing my visitors?
This episode was inspired by a recent conversation with a client who shared, “I’m getting traffic, but I’m not seeing conversions.” And if you’ve ever felt the same — like people are visiting your website, but not taking the next step — you’re not alone. So, let’s talk about three common reasons websites confuse visitors… and what you can do about it.
Your Website Has Too Many Calls-to-Action
The first reason your website might be confusing your visitors is having too many calls-to-action.
When you’re passionate about your business — and offer a variety of services or products — it’s easy to want to share everything all at once. But when every page has several buttons, links, pop-ups, or opt-ins, it creates decision fatigue for your visitor. And when someone is unsure of what to click on next… they often click away.
What to do instead? Choose one clear, primary call-to-action per page. That could be “Inquire Now,” “Shop the Templates,” or “Book a Free Call.” Guide your visitors like a good host would — one thoughtful step at a time.
Your Messaging Isn’t Clear or Compelling
The second reason is unclear messaging.
If someone lands on your website and can’t tell in 5 seconds or less what you do, who you serve, and how you can help them — they’ll move on. As business owners, we sometimes write our website copy from our perspective. But strong, strategic messaging is written from your visitor’s perspective.
What to do instead? Start by refining your homepage headline. Make it benefit-driven — something like “Custom brand and web design for creative business owners who are ready to grow with clarity and confidence.” You can always ask: Would a new visitor understand this sentence without knowing anything about my business?
Your Design Doesn’t Reflect the Quality of Your Work
The third reason? A disconnect between your visual design and your business’s quality.
This one can be tough to hear — but so many businesses are offering amazing, high-quality services… and their website simply doesn’t reflect that same level of care. Whether it’s outdated design, inconsistent fonts, or a lack of brand cohesion — the design of your website speaks volumes about the value you provide.
What to do instead? Focus on intentional, elevated design that aligns with your ideal client’s taste. Even small changes — like more whitespace, professional typography, or consistent color use — can immediately elevate your brand presence.
And of course, if you’re ready for a full transformation, that’s exactly what we do at With Grace and Gold — through custom design or our collection of Showit website templates, each rooted in strategy and created to convert.
