Logo design may seem straightforward, but behind-the-scenes, there is a whole lot of strategy and expertise behind every brand design. Today, we are excited to share a few quick dos and don’ts of logo design.
The Dos and Don’ts of Logo Design
Do keep it simple. We believe the most effective logo designs are clear and purpose driven. We believe the most effective design complements, and doesn’t compete with, our clients’ work. Rather than adding various colors, words, and elements to your logo design, consider how a sleek, purpose-driven design can better communicate the value of your products or services and your expertise. Often, a “simpler” more clean and modern logo can leave room for versatility in your business in the years ahead.
Don’t complicate it. Remember, your logo should be used freely, confidently, and consistently to serve your small business. Less is more in design.
Do your research! It’s important to know what is happening in your field, what your Ideal Client will connect with, and how your brand is communicating on behalf of your business. Rather than saying, ‘I like the color red, so therefore, red should be in my logo,’ really think about why the color red is meaningful in your business and essential for connecting with your Ideal Client. Trust your designer’s expertise as they work to create a design aligned with your preferences but more so rooted in your purpose. We love walking through these details with our clients, and explaining which design choices will serve their business and audience best in the long-term. (Part of our client experience is presenting each design to our clients, sharing about the purpose and expertise behind each design we create on behalf of their business.)
Don’t depend upon Pinterest. Pinterest is an awesome and awful tool. It’s so easy to see other brands and businesses and think, ‘They have a great brand! I want a logo like…THIS!’ While their logo works well for them, their logo won’t work well for you, too. Your logo should be a representation of your business, your expertise, and the value you create for your audience. Also remember, Pinterest is full of the ‘latest and greatest’ trends. Your logo should stand the test of time and be true to the core of your business.
