Creative small business owners have many strengths — thinking creatively, being innovative, and boldly and passionately pursuing new ideas…
At With Grace and Gold, we’ve always believed new ideas are worth exploring. The quote “A year from now, you’ll wish you had started today” rings true — so if there’s an idea that you’ve been holding onto or waiting to pursue, we hope today’s episode inspires you and encourages you to pursue it!
Today, I’m going to share how and why we’ve created a second small business: what led to our decision, why we’ve decided our second business should be separate from With Grace and Gold, and how we’ve strategically designed our second business so we can effectively manage both of our businesses.
There’s a lot to share in today’s episode, so we hope you enjoy!
How and Why We’ve Created a Second Business
As creative small business owners, we are constantly dreaming up new ways to run our businesses better; sometimes, that means adding new layers to our business like we talked about in Episode 011, and sometimes that means taking away from our businesses or outsourcing — like we talked about in Episode 013.
In just a few days, on Wednesday, July 1st to be exact, we’ll be celebrating the launch of a second business — a business Andra and I recently created separately from With Grace and Gold.
Our second business is called The Preset Market, and in today’s episode I want to share how The Preset Market came to be, why we decided our products should be sold separately from With Grace and Gold, and how we’re moving forward as co-founders of two businesses in a balanced way.
It all started in January 2020, when we noticed we’d been asked one particular question by our custom design clients at With Grace and Gold. Our custom design clients at With Grace and Gold come away with a one-of-a-kind brand, web design, and stationery designs. As their design process came to a close, our clients would often ask, “How do I make sure my Instagram feed and my future brand photos are aligned with this new brand and web design I have? Is there anything you recommend?”
We had always recommend stock photography to our clients, because there are so many amazing stock photography options to choose from. Then we realized, if we created mobile Lightroom presets — essentially, filters our clients could easily apply to their own photography — we could empower our clients to ensure their own photography could be well-aligned with their new brand and web design.
At With Grace and Gold, we don’t have a specific design style. From light and airy designs, to modern, bold, and colorful designs, to emotive and dark designs — our goal is always to create purposeful, strategy-driven brands and web designs to help our clients communicate their message, connect with their Ideal Client, and achieve their goals. So, as we brainstormed preset styles for The Preset Market, we knew we’d have to offer an array of options: a crisp and bright option, a neutral and warm option, and an emotive and dark option.
To create our presets, we needed to enlist the help of a professional photographer to ensure our presets were professionally and carefully created. We partnered with Tarah of Tarah Elise Photography to outsource the creation of the presets. We established a long-term, mutually-beneficial partnership to build the foundation of The Preset Market.
So, now that you’ve heard the backstory of The Preset Market, how did the business take shape? Why is it separate from With Grace and Gold, and how will we effectively manage both The Preset Market and With Grace and Gold? Stay tuned!
Before the break, I shared how our clients at With Grace and Gold helped us to discover a need for on-brand photography to align with their Instagram feed, brand, and web design. We enlisted the help of Tarah of Tarah Elise Photography to create mobile Lightroom presets in varying styles — so our clients could ensure their own photography is well-aligned with their new brand and web design.
- Question Number 1, how did The Preset Market become The Preset Market? Why is The Preset Market separate from With Grace and Gold? At With Grace and Gold, we have always been passionate about having clarity within our business. After all, our job is to ensure the clients we’re serving are clearly and openly communicating their message through brand and web design, in order to connect with their clients and move their businesses forward. We have always wanted With Grace and Gold to be known as a brand and web design business. Through our Custom Design Experiences and Showit Template Collection, we can create a clear message — that we provide brand and web design for diverse creative small business owners. We believed adding mobile Lightroom presets to our offerings at With Grace and Gold could create confusion about what With Grace and Gold has to offer. By starting a new business, The Preset Market could be its own brand, stand on its own, and be more about the story you tell through your photos. That way, the message and heart behind The Preset Market could not only be to help small business owners create on-brand photography, but it could also be to help everyday phone photographers to enhance their photos really seamlessly.
- Question Number 2, how did we create The Preset Market? At With Grace and Gold, our business hours are Monday – Thursday from 7 AM – 3 PM. After our business hours, and on Fridays, we chiseled away, little by little, on our work at The Preset Market. Because The Preset Market is a shop, many of the details — our brand, web design, social media profiles, newsletter system — need to be determined just once. After that, only marketing is needed for The Preset Market to move forward. For this, we enlisted the help of our husbands, Ben and Brent.
- Which leads to Question Number 3, how will we manage With Grace and Gold and The Preset Market? By working with our husbands, we’ve divided up our marketing to-dos between the four of us. We’ll be working at With Grace and Gold Monday – Thursday as we always have, and we’ll be working at The Preset Market on Fridays. That way, both businesses can run effectively and with care.
We hope today’s episode provided a well-rounded look at what it’s like to create a second business, what to consider when it comes to adding offerings to your existing business or creating an entirely new business, and how to manage more than one business simultaneously. Of course, there are many paths to the same destination, and we’re hopeful our experiences encourage you to pursue your dreams and goals.
